The Presidential Physical Fitness

At Fitness International, LLC we're proud to support the Presidential Initiative to revitalize the President's Council on Sport, Fitness and Nutrition - an important effort to improve the health of our nation. As part of this, the Presidential Physical Fitness Test for school-aged children is making a comeback, and we're excited to do our part.

1956: The Beginning
The test was established by President Eisenhower to address concerns about the physical fitness of American youth.

1966: Formalization
The President's Council on Youth Fitness formalized the Presidential Physical Fitness Award program under President Lyndon B. Johnson. Specific fitness tests and awards for students who met the criteria were created.

Evolving Tests
The specific exercises evolved, but usually included a one-mile run, sit-ups, pull-ups (or push-ups), and a sit-and-reach test.

Focus on Competition
The test emphasized competition, with awards given to students scoring in the top 15% nationally.

Shift in Focus
The Presidential Youth Fitness Program, implemented during the Obama administration, shifted the focus from competition to overall health.

Revival
In 2025, President Trump signed an executive order to reinstate the original Presidential Fitness Test, citing concerns about obesity, chronic disease, inactivity, and poor nutrition among American youth.
